When it comes to pricing, IONOS stands out with its strong value, especially if you commit to longer terms. Their Starter plan starts at $6 per month, including a free domain for one year, and scales up to a Pro plan with unlimited web space and pages.
You get AI-powered features included even at the entry level.
Squarespace, on the other hand, offers sleek, all-in-one plans starting at $16 per month, with its Business and Commerce tiers geared toward growing online stores but at higher prices. While Squarespace’s plans come with excellent templates and built-in e-commerce, IONOS offers more affordable options and storage for small to medium-sized websites, making it easier to fit various budgets.

Immediately, an AI bot responded and asked what issue I needed help with. I requested to speak with a human agent, and the bot quickly provided me with multiple contact options, including a phone number, a callback service, and the option to start a live chat with a real person.

Next, I decided to test their phone support. I called the US support number, +1-484-254-5555, and after a brief wait, I connected with an agent. I asked a fairly technical question:
“Regarding SEO, does your system automatically create metadata like meta descriptions and schema markup for the AI-generated content? If yes, how much control do I have to customize those outputs?”
The agent responded politely and confidently, explaining how their SEO tool allows for both AI-generated and manual metadata input. The call was clear, and the agent was patient in addressing my question.

Once I requested a live agent, the system informed me:

I waited for nearly 40 minutes before an agent finally joined the chat.

Ecommerce support is very strong, with advanced shipping, subscription sales, and point-of-sale options built in.

To really understand how these platforms perform in real-world conditions, I ran GTmetrix tests on two live websites I created, one hosted on IONOS’s website builder and the other on Squarespace.
Here’s what I found:
IONOS’s site scored a perfect 100% on performance and had a very low Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 726 milliseconds, meaning the main content appeared on the screen almost instantly.
The site had zero total blocking time, no layout shifts, and fully loaded in just over 750 milliseconds.
This is exceptionally fast and suggests a smooth browsing experience without delays or visual glitches.

Breaking down the timing, the Time to First Byte (TTFB) was 155 ms, showing the server responded quickly. First Contentful Paint and Time to Interactive were both under 600 ms, meaning users can see and interact with content very rapidly.
On the other hand, Squarespace’s site showed a performance score of 56%, with an LCP of 2.8 seconds, almost four times slower than IONOS.
The Total Blocking Time was 530 milliseconds, indicating noticeable delays before the site became interactive. Cumulative Layout Shift, while low, was higher than IONOS’s zero, suggesting some minor visual instability during load.

Squarespace’s fully loaded time was 6.3 seconds, which is quite slow compared to IONOS’s sub-one-second load.
Although the Time to First Byte was slightly faster at 140 ms, backend time was lower, and the longer delays mostly came from heavier page structure and loading scripts.
These results show that IONOS offers a significantly faster, more responsive website experience, especially important for visitor retention and SEO rankings. The near-instant load times mean users aren’t waiting around, which can boost engagement and conversions.

When I landed on the IONOS Website Builder page, the first thing that caught my eye was their bold claim about building a website fast with AI assistance. The big “See plans” button stood out, so I clicked it to explore pricing and plan options.
On the plans page, I saw three main tiers: Starter, Plus, and Pro. I was particularly interested in the Plus plan, as it promised a powerful editor and additional features at an introductory price of $1 per month for the first year, followed by $18 per month thereafter.
There was also a dropdown allowing me to pick between a basic website builder or an online store builder. Since I was aiming for a simple website, I chose the basic option.

Clicking “Add to cart” took me to the checkout summary, where I had to choose a contract length: options ranged from 1 to 36 months. I settled on a 12-month term because it balanced a good discount with flexibility, resulting in an upfront cost of $12 for the year.
Then came the domain setup page. IONOS provided me with three options: search for a new domain, generate one with AI, or proceed without a domain.
Since I wasn’t ready to decide on a domain yet, I clicked “Proceed without domain,” appreciating the freedom to start building right away.

The onboarding then asked me to choose a Site Title, which I entered temporarily since it’s editable later. I also picked a Brand Personality from options like Professional, Playful, Sophisticated, Friendly, Bold, Quirky, and Innovative. - Edit Mode: The prominent EDIT button at the top left let me switch between preview and editing easily.

Both dashboards gave me confidence that I could efficiently manage and customize my site. IONOS is geared more towards beginners who want guidance and clear action steps, while Squarespace caters more to users who prioritize design control and a clean interface.
Next, I moved on to test how well the actual website editors worked for customizing and building the site.

After exploring the dashboard, I clicked the “Edit Website” button to access the IONOS website editor, where all customization takes place.
Right away, the editor presented a clean, well-organized interface. On the left, a vertical menu clearly labeled Content, Design, Pages, and Store. Each tab gave me access to different parts of the site:
